Food news antipasto

‘Tis the season to make lists. Vice brings us its list of the best cookbooks of 2023, The Guardian’s Rachel Roddy chimes in with her picks for the top five food books of the year, and food writer and chef Kathy Gunst weighs in on her choices for the three best cookbooks released in 2023 (with recipes from each). The annual Eater Awards were just released as well, with the winners including “a spectacular Twin Cities deli slinging standout egg, cheese, hashbrown, and collard green sandwiches; a bold new Seattle cocktail bar garnishing glasses with Polaroids of customers; a Nashville Thai fried chicken expert; and a San Diego purveyor of fluffy chiffon cakes.”

The holidays bring with them many food traditions. Some of these don’t make sense to food writer Callan Boys, who discusses the eight Christmas food traditions that he can’t quite understand. Among the items are eggnog, candy canes, and marzipan. “I have the same relationship with marzipan that I do with contemporary art,” he says. “I’m never quite sure what it is, and I can’t recall if I like it. But after one bite of a moulded Santa or sugar-dusted “fruit”, the memories come flooding back.”

The freezer is one of the cook’s and baker’s best tools, when used properly. However, not everything can be successfully frozen and it can be difficult to determine which items will do well and which will fare poorly in the freezer. This week I learned from Southern Living that you can safely freeze green onions and heavy cream.

Jane came across a charming article this week titled “True Confessions of a Cookbook Junkie“, where Baltimore food writer Dara Bunjon recounts her love of our favorite subject. Bunjon also fondly recalls Massachusetts-based discount cookbook retailer Jessica’s Biscuit, the loss of which (nine years ago already!) EYB Members also lamented.

In celebrity cookbook news, Gisele Bündchen announced that she is writing a cookbook titled Nourish to be released in March of next year. “In Nourish, I share my family’s favorite simple, nutritious and delicious recipes and some self-care rituals that help me so much in my life especially as a busy, working mom,” she explained in an Instagram post.

I was amused by Callan Boys article. To this American, Australian Christmas eating seems to be the victim of continuing European traditions of warming spices and heavy food suited more to the Midwinter weather the holiday aligns with in the north, than the Australian Midsummer. While I might enjoy an eggnog by the fire, I cannot imagine partaking of one between rounds of beach volleyball.

Fyretigger: never had mulled wine on a jet ski? No warm gingerbread while camping in the outback?

Interesting, regarding shelf life of heavy cream. I place them first into small silicon ice cube tray and once frozen, pop them into airtight ziplock. These last at least one year tor me.

I loved Jessica’s Biscuit. Was a regular customer.

Here is some oddity. Kentucky Fried Chicken goes out the door in Christmas with Japanese looking to buy this American iconic white haired man’s chicken to bring home to their family along with a beautiful Christmas strawberry short cake full of whipped cream and strawberries in December from bakeries or department store specialty basement bakeries. Also, Christmas Eve is for romantic dinner out at high priced restaurants.

I laughed out loud at this…thanks for morning smile 🙂

I saw the article from Dara Bunjon – she is using my trademark! 🙂
