Was this the ultimate Le Creuset deal?

After writing about the Le Creuset factory to table sale, Jane forwarded me a tweet about a deal being offered by Costco that would allow someone to jumpstart their collection and become a super collector overnight. The wholesale club was offering a whopping 157-piece set of Le Creuset that comes with an eye-popping price tag: $4,499.99 USD. While I wondered who would be willing to shell out such an amount for cookware all in one go, I later learned that the set is sold out (apparently everywhere – I tried several locations with no luck). If you do the math, the items in the set would sell for about $8,000 at full retail, or about $6,000 if you purchased all of the items during LC’s sales where most items are discounted 20 to 30 percent.

Jane and I also pondered where someone would be able to store this many pieces. Even though it includes some smaller items, the set contains many large Dutch ovens, skillets, and large baking dishes that would take up a lot of real estate in one’s cupboards. Apparently this isn’t an issue for the people who have snatched up the offer. I wonder how many of these sets were available in the first place. Did Costco sell 10 of these sets, 1,000, or more?

Since the item is out of stock I wasn’t able to view the full product description, but according to The Kitchn, Costco touted it as “The ultimate cookware set from Le Creuset includes everything you need to set up your kitchen to be your own professional chef.” The set only came in cerise, so if you didn’t like red you were out of luck. Because the set sold out quickly, perhaps Costco will make more of them available for purchase. It’s also possible that this was all a publicity stunt. If so, kudos to the PR team.

If it’s true there will probably be a significant increase in LC items on ebay.

Can’t see how this is meant to be a good deal.

For some reason, all I can think of is what 157 pieces of LC would weigh?!?

This has been going on for a while — I heard it arrives on several pallets – and all I could think was how in the bloody heck would I hide THAT from my husband.

I was excited when I saw this, but looking closely at the photo, very few cast iron cooking items are shown. Most of the items are dishes, utensils, bakeware, stainless cookware, and just 6 cast iron larger covered items, plus 4 minis if my count is right. Would love to see the actual list of what was included.

My wife must never hear about this.

This had been circulating in my LC groups for a while. I’m a collector so I can’t hate on the sheer number of items, but I primarily stick to their cast iron and wouldn’t want all of those other baking pans and accessories. Plus half the fun of LC is all the beautiful colors. Having everything in Cerise would bore me to death.

I figure a family could go in together and divvy it up. Although, good point about making sure you like the cerise color!
