April 26, 2023 by DarcieThe James Beard Foundation has announced the nominees for its 2023 Media Awards, which includes cookbooks. JBF again made changes to the categories including a separate category for Bread. “As the culinary world continues to evolve, it is essential that we celebrate and uplift diverse voices and perspectives,” said Erica Skolnik, Chair of the James Beard Foundation’s Book Awards program. “With new categories this year such as Food Issues and Advocacy, we are thrilled to recognize writers who are using their platform to celebrate the art of food and beverage, while also advancing important issues in our industry.”
The Book Awards are open to cookbooks and other non-fiction food or beverage-related books that were published in the United States in 2022. EYB Members will recognize almost every book on this list of nominees, which features many of our favorite authors including in the Baking category: Tava by Irina Georgescu; New European Baking by Laurel Kratochvila and What’s for Dessert by Claire Saffitz. In the afore-mentioned Bread section, The Miller’s Daughter by Emma Zimmerman is up against The Perfect Loaf by Maurizio Leo and Breadsong by Kitty and Al Tait.
The General category sees I Dream of Dinner by Ali Slagle vying for honors against Sunday Best by Adrienne Cheatham and The Cook You Want to Be by Andy Baraghani.
Other nominees of note to our Members include: Mi Cocina by Rick Martinez, Masala: Recipes from India by Anita Jaisinghani and Mezcla: Recipes to Excite by Ixta Belfrage in the International category; The Wok: Recipes and Techniques by J. Kenji López-Alt in Single Subject; Bludso’s BBQ Cookbook by Kevin Bludso and Noah Galuten in Restaurant and Professional; The Bartender’s Manifesto by The Bartenders of The Violet Hour in Beverages with Recipes.
