After three years of having only virtual events, Michelin will launch its 2023 guide for Great Britain and Ireland at an in-person celebration on 27 March 2023. The ceremony will be held at the Silverstone Circuit in Northampton. Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guides said: “After two years without being able to organise a physical event in Great Britain & Ireland, we are thrilled to be back with what should be a warm, exciting and friendly gathering.”

If you’re having difficulty with motivation in the kitchen following the holiday cooking and baking spree, you are not alone. Finding ways to bring back the spark can be a challenge, but The Kitchn has some ideas to bring back your cooking mojo. One that resonated with me is bringing the outside in via a fresh-cut floral arrangement. With sub-zero temperatures expected throughout the next two weeks, a vase of colorful blooms might spread some cheer in my kitchen.

Smuggling contraband across borders isn’t a new phenomenon, but the goods that are currently making their way surreptitiously into the U.S. are not the usual suspects. Forget drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes: the latest items that border agents are finding in high demand are cartons of eggs. Other poultry products are also hot commodities, with seizures of these goods up 108%.

If you are a fan of Oreo cookies, take note of this article. Nabisco just announced its latest iteration of the classic cookie (which happens to be vegan, so it’s pretty much universally enjoyed). The newest Oreo is not only super-stuffed, the filling is studded with crushed Oreos.

Because I try to find food news from English-speaking countries across the globe, I browse websites from the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. One that I frequently turn to is The Guardian because it has an excellent food section and it conveniently allows me to toggle between the various editions. A few days ago I noticed that when I went to the UK edition, it bounced me to the “.com” address instead of the “.co.uk” address. At first I thought it was an automatic redirect based off my IP address, which occasionally happens. I’m usually able to use the menu to navigate to the edition I really want to read but not this time. Since I was able to move to the Australian edition without a redirect, I have concluded that The Guardian has merged its US and UK food sections, in essence abandoning the US edition. Am I mistaken that this is a recent change?

Another thing I discovered today is that I’m older than ciabatta. This bit of startling (to me) news comes from Good Food (Aus), which answered a reader question about why she couldn’t find any recipes using ciabatta in an old Italian cookbook. That’s because the bread was invented in 1982 by an Italian flour miller who was worried that Italians were buying too many baguettes from France. (Scroll down for the ciabatta story, which comes after good advice on how to store bread.) Is anyone else surprised to learn this, or am I the only one who didn’t know?

Late addition for the Le Creuset lovers – LC has released new Valentine’s Day-themed cookware. The collection includes a sweet soup pot with tiny hearts, gold heart-shaped knobs, a spoon rest, a tea kettle, a shallow heart-shaped cocotte, and more.

Ciabatta— I had no idea! That’s like when I found out (I also knit… and I’m an Irish immigrant to the US) that Aran jumpers were invented by Aran Islands knitters in the late 1890’s or early 1900’s and had this whole romantic history attached to them by a yarn shop owner retroactively (and incorrectly).

The Ciabatta thing I’ve known about for a while but this sort of thing has a long history. In the UK the same can be said for a Ploughman’s Lunch which started out as 1960’s marketing thing to sell more cheese. It’s all about money! Starbucks makes millions from tourists who want to get a coffee from the first ever Starbucks in Pike Place. Oddly they don’t tell people the first Starbucks burnt down after 5 years so got re-located. 🙂
