Have you tried butter boards?

Watch out charcuteries boards, the hottest TikTok/Instagram food trend is coming for you. I’m talking about butter boards, which are all the rage right now. If you haven’t seen one, it really is what the name suggests – boards “smeared with softened butter and topped with all manner of savory and sweet accoutrements,” and they are multiplying like rabbits on social media.

Butter boards are the brainchild of food influencer Justine Doiron, who published her creation with the goal of one-upping charcuterie boards. She was inspired by author Joshua McFadden, whose cookbook Six Seasons: A New Way with Vegetables includes a recipe for “Herbed” butter with warm bread. (There are several recipes for flavored butters in that excellent tome, such as the Pickled vegetable butter shown above.)

McFadden learned that his recipe had gone viral, and enjoys the fact that people are riffing on it. “It’s a fun recipe because anyone can do it; it’s really accessible,” he said. The chef loves the communal aspect of the dish: “it’s connecting people, and that’s super cool, especially at a time when the world is so weird.” With the price of quality butter these days, a butter board would be a big splurge but could make a splash at your next gathering.

Just fyi – the link to Pickled vegetable butter may have a typo in it; it gives a not found error message. There aren’t many cookbooks on my wishlist these days, but that one seems worth adding.

I can highly recommend Six Seasons. It is one of those rare beautifully written and illustrated cookbooks that you can just sit down and read for the sheer pleasure of it.
