Kitchen tool countdown

You can never have too much storage space in a kitchen, because the more space you have the more kitchen stuff you can buy. However, not all kitchen tools are created equal – there are many single-purpose items that aren’t strictly necessary, and low-quality gadgets are often not worth the price. Quality kitchen tools will withstand the test of time, and Epicurious brings us a list of the top tools their staff has discovered in 2021.

There are many types of items represented in this list, from portable espressos makers to knives to cleaning products. I probably am not going to run out and buy a pie maker for campfire cooking even though I like the idea of making delicious hand pies like the Lemon thyme and blackberry hand pies pictured above from Bake From Scratch. However, the coffee grinder cleaning tablets caught my attention, because I use a wall-mounted vintage coffee grinder that is a bear to clean. This looks like a much better solution than disassembling the 100 year old grinder.

Another item that caught my eye was the goat hair dusting brush. I use a plastic version of this that doesn’t do a great job on the fine items like spilled flour. I can imagine that a brush with thinner bristles would perform better, but I am balking at the $59 USD price tag. Do any of the items on the Epicurious list pique your interest?

The Danish dough whisk! I discovered this wonderful tool more than a decade ago while at a King Arthur baking class. My two whisks are in constant use and it’s my go-to gift for aspiring bakers.

The whisk, OXO grater and angled cup, Zwilling food saver, and Thermopen are wonderful. Of course, we all have cake pans; the rest I’m not sure about although I did order the Kiwi slicer and Japanese can opener darn it.

Buying a drafting brush from an art supply store might be more cost-effective. Here is a selection. The goat’s hair one is $18.99

You can also get one on Amazon for the same price but it didn’t have great reviews – this one is much cheaper and has good reviews.

And I thought a Danish dough whisk is an essential – in fact multiple ones in different sizes.

I purchased a danish dough whisk earlier this year and though I don’t bake often, I like the way it works.
