Making lemonade out of lemons by supporting Sharon Wee

On Sunday morning, Eat Your Books reported on the alleged plagiarism by Elizabeth Haigh of Sharon Wee’s work. It has come to light there are many other allegations that work was lifted from online sources and blogs. Since our post went up – other outlets have unearthed more information. The most current and comprehensive is London Eater’s article.

I have a proposal to share, instead of focusing on Haigh’s wrongdoing (we will allow Bloomsbury and those wronged to handle that portion), let’s support Sharon Wee by doing any of the following:

Buy an ebook of Sharon’s title Growing Up in a Nonya Kitchen: Singapore Recipes from My Mother as her book is out of print and she will not benefit from purchasing a used copy from a third party. Purchasing an ebook will show the publisher that there is interest as well as result in commissions for Sharon. (Please note: the description of the book on Amazon states: This is a newly uploaded ebook file for 2019, that corrects formatting issues.) I bought the book on Sunday and had no issues reading it.

Buy a copy of Sharon’s title from this Singapore bookseller which apparently has the title in stock.

Follow Sharon on social media. Facebook and Instagram

Visit Sharon’s website and scroll to the bottom of her website home page and subscribe to her emails.

All this will show our support to Sharon and hopefully result in a re-issue of her fantastic book.

Update: According to Amazon.co.uk this book may be re-released however there is no ISBN listed so I am hesitant to state that this information is correct. The publisher’s site has it re-issued as of Jul 2021 and I am emailing them today (Oct 13). I have reached out to Sharon to confirm. She has seen my messages but hasn’t responded.

Went straight away to but the Kindle version BUT there were reviews saying not to but it. Is not a proper ebook. Just photos of the pages that can’t be enlarged ?

Jane – If you note in the Amazon description – the Kindle issues were resolved in 2019. Those reviews re: Kindle were from prior and reviews since state no problems. I have no difficulty reading the text. Also if you have a problem reading the text for some reason you can go to your digital orders and return the book.

Ken, I saw this late last night – and came to update the post. The publisher’s site has it reissued as of Jul 2021. I have written Sharon and she isn’t responding – but has seen my message. The book is not on any other site so I am hesitant to state that this is correct information until someone confirms. Emailing publisher today.

Sharon has re-posted mentions of the re-issue on her Instagram stories so it seems to be correct. Amazon is taking pre-orders.

    Maybe someone could index it.

If a member would like to volunteer to index the title, that would be great. It is only on 16 bookshelves right now. When it is re-issued and if that number grows we can assign it professionally.
