Guild of Food Writers announces 2020 winners

Last month we reported on the finalists for the 2020 UK Guild of Food Writers Awards. Today the Guild has announced the winners in the various categories. Highlighted winners are listed below, and you can visit our 2020 Guild of Food Writers awards page to see the complete list.

The big winner for 2020 is The Vinegar Cupboard by Angela Clutton, which garnered two prizes: the First Book Award and Specialist or Single Subject Cookbook Award. Kudos to Ms. Clutton for this feat. Ella Rizbridger’s memoir/cookbook Midnight Chicken (& Other Recipes Worth Living For) took home the General Cookbook Award, and best International cookbook honors went to Fire Islands: Recipes from Indonesia by Eleanor Ford. This year’s Food Writing Award winner is Olivia Potts for her work in various media including The Guardian.

The real sleeper of 2020 came with the winner of the Food Book of the Year Award (shortened to just Food Book Award for 2020), The Forager’s Calendar: A Seasonal Guide to Nature’s Wild Harvests by John Wright. Even though I am an amateur forager, I had no idea there were so many books on foraging in the EYB Library – over 150 volumes!

I read this and ordered John Wright’s The Forager’s Calendar straight away! I have seen him on TV in Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage series and often thought I would love to out foraging with him. He’s written others in the River Cottage Handbook series that are excellent so I am really looking forward to reading this new one and look forward to when I can get out into the country again.
