Celebrate National Pie Day
January 23, 2020 by DarcieWell, I missed it – again. Today was National Pie Day, celebrated in several countries, and I forgot about it. That is because I believe the logical choice for the day is March 14, a dual pi(e) celebration. (Nerds unite!)

I once wrote a persuasive argument that pie is better than cake, and I think that it still holds true today. The great thing about pie is that there is so much variety: fillings can be savory or sweet, creamy or chunky, filled with custard or fruit or vegetables or meat. No matter your dietary preferences or restrictions, everyone can enjoy a slice of pie. Every meal can feature pie, from breakfast to dinner and beyond (there’s no shame in having a piece of pie in your pajamas in front of the refrigerator at 2 am). Whether you are celebrating one of life’s little victories or comforting yourself after a disappointment, pie is the perfect food choice.
While it may be too late officially celebrate Pie Day, you can make up for it by making two tomorrow. The EYB Library is replete with tremendous pie recipes, including these Member favorites:
- Butternut squash and caramelized onion galette from The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook
- Gérard’s mustard tart from Around My French Table
- Brownie pie from Momofuku Milk Bar
- Black bottom lemon pie from The Four and Twenty Blackbirds Pie Book (pictured)
- Deep-dish winter fruit pie with walnut crumb from Rustic Fruit Desserts
