Eat Offbeat: The Cookbook

Eat OffBeat is a New York food business that delivers authentic and home-style ethnic meals that are conceived, prepared and delivered by refugees resettled in NYC.

As I’ve stated on numerous occasions, I have a passion for ethnic cuisine and any book that brings the food and culture of the world into my home. What a treasure it is to be able to experience the world through food.

When a friend sent me the information about Eat Offbeat’s kickstarter project, I jumped on it and shared it with my cookbook loving community which includes you, my Eat Your Book’s family.

The chefs behind this project are women from Syria, Iraq, Eritrea and Guinea. Today being International Women’s Day makes this a perfect project to back to honor women.

This cookbook will be the first of its kind-written by refugees telling their own story and sharing their recipes. It will feature 80 recipes and stories representing at least 20 chefs hailing from 15 different countries. 10% of proceeds will go to the International Rescue Committee, and all remaining profits from this campaign will be invested in hiring and training more refugees.

When Eat Offbeat, began they had three goals in mind: “to introduce New Yorkers to new and off-the-beaten-path cuisines, create opportunities for talented home cooks who happened to be refugees by status, and, most importantly, showcase the value refugees bring this country.”

Since then, they have trained and hired 16 chefs from 11 different countries, fed 15,000 New Yorkers and introduced them to over 30 of our chefs’ unique family dishes and now they want to  bring their chefs’ food into our kitchens, wherever we are.

The goal of this cookbook besides the good it will do for so many is to have us sit down to dinner with family and friends sharing the dishes created from these recipes and have meaningful conversations about appreciating other cultures through food. Food brings people together – it is love and warmth around a table. When we take the time to learn of another’s traditions through meals, we garner a deeper understanding that we are more alike than different.

Please read about this project on their kickstarter page. (Bonus: they will ship the book worldwide!) Also, please share this post so that others will know the good work that Eat Offbeat is doing. Bravo to Eat Offbeat!
