A really special celebration dish in my family is an eggplant rollup. We slice asian eggplants thinly trying to keep as much width as possible. Salt and pan roast till pliable. Then make a roll with spoonfulls of peas and tomato pilaf with basmati rice in each wggplant sheet. Arrange a casserole. Then bake with either a tomato based gravy to make like a korma or a garbanzo bean flour gravy to make like a kadhi

I'd say brisket. My husband's family is Jewish and it seems brisket appears at the table for most celebrations.

"What special dish is a celebration staple in your family?" Definitely lasagne. Also carrot cake (my grandfather is a retired baker and he's ruined me for all other carrot cakes).

My younger brother loves coconut. So there's this reduced-fat (but not reduced-sugar) recipe–the original recipe was from Weight Watchers, I believe–of coconut cake involving fat-free sweetened condensed milk with coconut extract that's topped with whipped cream and just enough flaked coconut to fake you out: it wouldn't be July without someone in the family whipping up this dessert.

I was making roasted Brussels sprouts long before it was cool and now I bring a big (I use an old broiler pan) of roasted veggies to family gatherings. I do carrots and other vegetables but what goes first is the Brussels sprouts.
