October 2013 Cookbook Roundup
October 30, 2013 by SusieEvery month Susie Chang reviews new cookbook releases and notes trends in the United States. And she may also occasionally throw in a review of a “not-quite cookbook.” And for our non-U.S. members, Jane and Fiona provide similar reviews for new U.K., Australia, and New Zealand releases.

United States:
The fall onslaught continues, with publishers releasing one would-be hit after another. So as with last month, I’ve continued using a categorized list to organize the flood of entries. The categories are listed in sorting order (it’s like a series of filters – cookbooks get sorted into whichever one they fit in first). That’s why you will find cookbooks containing, say, Italian recipes popping up in “Restaurants” or “Baking” before you get to “Ethnic/Regional.”
The restaurant tie-ins in particular are picking up speed this fall, and more and more of them are hitting the $50 mark (unlike the typical $35 hardcover cookbook). I have a theory that the more expensive the cookbook, the less likely it is to live and work in the kitchen and the more likely it is to enjoy a life of leisure on the coffee table. What do you think?
