Gourmet picnic & camping gear

stove with phone

Here are some fun suggestions from restaurant owner Peter Hoffman via the Wall Street Journal. His mission was to “test gear for the ambitious campside cook.” He had us at the bio lite stove that generates enough electricity to charge your phone; it also uses the heat to power a turbine that can stimulate the flame.

There are also other grills the articles takes a look at, but regarding other equipment, we really liked a foldable cutting board that stores a chef’s knife inside as well as a lightweight pot with a heat-resistant silicone handle. This is a video, so you can see the equipment being used.

And while we’re on the subject, here are some popular online recipes specifically targeted for picnics and outdoor cooking.

I camp about a week per month in my small travel trailer and recommend this spice arrangement. Although the tubes are glass, I haven't managed to break one despite thousands of miles of travel in their lovely hardwood holder. These racks are made by American shop class star students who DIDN'T go to the prom with the queen, but know how cooks use flavor. http://www.tubularspices.com/wooden_spice_racks.asp

I also indexed The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Camping and Hiking, Second Edition, but very few members have catalogued it. I suspect there are more members who own it but didn’t think to catalog it because it’s not primarily a cookbook:
