Pies in the face and James Bond

Sean Connery in Goldfinger

This weekend we’re honoring the Oscars with great food-related movie moments. Yesterday we wrote about The best food movies and movie scenes. Today we’re presenting memorable food fights and a tribute to 50 years of James Bond.

Food Republic recently published 10 of Our Favorite Movie Foodfights, inviting readers to “get ready to get dirty.” Here’s their list:

  • Homicidal tomatoes in Attack of the Killer Tomatoes
  • The pie fight in Blazing Saddles
  • Meat dumping on PCU
  • Making s’mores on Heavyweights
  • Hot peppers on Dumb and Dumber
  • James Cagney smashing his girlfriend’s face with a grapefruit in The Public Enemy
  • Cafeteria food fight in Animal House
  • Food fight in True Romance
  • Magical food fight in Hook
  • Stallone vs. a slab of frozen meat in Rocky

We’d add an obscure one that’s still wonderful – the pie fight in the 1965 movie, The Great Race. Jack Lemmon (after diving into a cake), Natalie Wood, and Peter Falk get into it with gusto and an immaculate Tony Curtis finally gets his. You can see it here (isn’t You Tube wonderful?).

And now for a far more sophisticated approach, we  look at Food52’s tribute to James Bond. The Oscar show will be giving recognition to 50 years of James Bond movies, and who are we to ignore such a prestigious event?

In Oscar Night 2013: Celebrating 50 Years of James Bond they  build an “Oscar night menu in 007 style. Because British + sexy + the 1960s = an excellent party theme.” The stirred (not shaken) martini is a given, but we applaud the creativity that includes, among other dishes, suggestions for  Deviled Clams Casino, Scotch Eggs, Fried Oysters with Saffron Aioli, and Octopus Salad, (all of the recipes are included).

However, we were a little disappointed that there was no homage to our favorite Bond movie, Goldfinger. So for those of you with a sweet tooth, we direct you to this Kentucky Bourbon Cake and ask you to use it to toast James and Pussy Galore.
