Jack Monroe raises money to distribute copies of her new cookbook
June 1, 2019 by DarcieIt’s safe to say that food writer Jack Monroe has never followed convention. Her award-winning blog, A Girl Called Jack (now named Cooking on a Bootstrap), made a tremendous impact, showing the world that you can eat well on a tight budget. To promote her latest cookbook, Monroe has once again eschewed convention, creating a fundraising appeal so she can donate 7,000 copies of the book to food banks in the UK.
Tin Can Cook, published on Thursday and already No 3 on Amazon UK’s chart, is a collection of 75 recipes that can be made purely from store-cupboard ingredients. To date, Monroe has raised £30,000 in support of her mission. Remaining money will be donated either as cash or books to food bank charity the Trussell Trust. The book’s publisher is also distributing 50,000 recipe cards excerpted from Tin Can Cook to food banks, and the fundraising campaign spurred global food giant Heinz donated £10,000 to the Trussell Trust as well.
“I have donated my previous books to food banks and told them they can photocopy the pages to hand out to their clients, and they have done so in their thousands,” Monroe posted on the fundraiser. “I have made thousands of recipe cards to hand out to food bank users in conjunction with Oxfam and the Trussell Trust. But I want to do more. I want this book to reach as many people as it needs to.”
