Best of the Best Cookbook List 2017

Each year, Jane collects the “best cookbooks” lists from a wide variety of sources, ranging from television to radio to bloggers to newspapers – over 300 lists in total. After aggregating and ranking 815 books, Jane compiled the winners into EYB’s “Best of the Best” cookbooks of 2017.

This year Yotam Ottolenghi is back in the top cookbook spot for Sweet, co-written with pastry chef Helen Goh. Sweet brings fresh, evocative ingredients, exotic spices and complex flavourings – including fig, rose petal, saffron, aniseed, orange blossom, pistachio and cardamom – to indulgent cakes, biscuits, tarts, puddings, cheesecakes and ice cream in over 100 innovative recipes. The EYB Sweet Ottolenghi Cookbook Club is working through this title.

Check out the Best of the Best page for all the other winners plus charts by country, and by specialty, including Vegetarian & vegan books, Drinks books, and Food writing books.

Here’s how the top 10 books stack up. Almost all of the books were featured in Jenny’s Top Cookbooks of 2017 list

  1. Sweet by Yotam Ottolenghi and Helen Goh (538 Bookshelves)
  2. Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat by Samin Nosrat (520 Bookshelves)
  3. Smitten Kitchen Every Day  by Deb Perelman (322 Bookshelves)
  4. BraveTart by Stella Parks (295 Bookshelves)
  5. Six Seasons by Josh McFadden (339 Bookshelves)
  6. At My Table by Nigella Lawson (204 Bookshelves)
  7. Dinner: Changing the Game by Melissa Clark (702 Bookshelves)
  8. Dining In by Alison Roman (71 Bookshelves)
  9. David Tanis Market Cooking by David Tanis (97 Bookshelves)
  10. The Cooking Gene by Michael Twitty (29 Bookshelves)

Of the 815 cookbooks that were compiled, a little under half received just one vote. See the complete collection of cookbooks on the 2017 Best Cookbooks page. How did your favorite books do? Is there any book not on the list that you thought was fantastic?

Thanks so much for the work of compiling this, Jane; I look forward to it every year. Salt Fat Acid Heat is the 2017 book I'm most eager to read. Several others in the Best of the Best are on my list of 30 from this year's offerings. One of those, David Tanis Market Cooking, is tenth of the 30 in EYB popularity but dead last in buzz. We'll see if that changes in the new year as people put their holiday gifts to use…

Six Seasons and David Tanis Market Cooking were my two top picks of 2017 – as well as Sweet and Bravetart for baking. Killer year.
