How much would you pay for a pancake?

Chain restaurants like Denny’s, Perkins, and IHOP are known for their all-day breakfast menus and relatively low prices. They dish up bacon, eggs, pancakes, waffles, and other breakfast items that may not be the most elevated fare but are solidly in the “it’s fine” camp. IHOP is hoping to break away from this reputation by introducing a $100 Dubai chocolate pancake at three of its locations this week.

The company is calling its new creation “a luxurious and exquisite version” of the breakfast staple. The buttermilk pancakes feature the quintessential Dubai Chocolate flavors of pistachio, hazelnut and kataifi. The toppings include a large Dubai Chocolate bar, vanilla whipped cream and to literally gild the lily, a sprinkle of 24 karat gold shavings. The opulent treat will be offered at Austin, Los Angeles, and New York locations on Monday, August 4.

Diners who partake of this feast won’t actually have to pay $100, either – the company is only make 25 stacks per location and will be providing “tastes” to diners. They are then offering a pared-down version of the luxury treat for $13 – much more in line with their regular prices. However, only 500 of these will be available, and only at those three locations. IHOP hopes this publicity stunt will boost sales, which have been flagging in recent months.

As much as I like the Dubai chocolate flavors, I would not want to be part of this kind of frenzy. This is why I prefer Waffle House as the chain where I get my diner breakfast fix – Waffle House is never going to muck up their menu with such an outlandish offering. I know I can always have my hash browns scattered, smothered, and covered.

Why eat gold? I’d rather have it on my finger!
