2023 Art of Eating Prize winner announced
May 16, 2023 by DarcieThe Art of Eating Prize is awarded annually to the author of the year’s best book about food (or food and drink together). Where other food book awards involve nominations in diverse categories, The Art of Eating Prize focuses on a single best book. The founders of the prize, by rewarding the highest quality work, hope to encourage the excellence of food writing in general. The prize is worth $10,000. Recently, The Art of Eating published its shortlist of the best food books of 2023, which included the following volumes:

- Eating to Extinction: The World’s Rarest Foods and Why We Need to Save Them by Dan Saladino
- Ghetto Gastro Black Power Kitchen by Jon Gray and Pierre Serrao and Lester Walker
- Korean American: Food that Tastes Like Home by Eric Kim
- Pig Years by Ellen Gaydos
- The Wok: Recipes and Techniques by J. Kenji López-Alt
The longlist was published earlier this year, and today the organization announced the overall winner of the 2023 Art of Eating Prize for best food book. The honor goes posthumously to Gullah Geechee Home Cooking: Recipes from the Matriarch of Edisto Island by Emily Meggett with Kayla Stewart and Trelani Michelle. Last May we remarked on Emily Meggett’s amazing story about getting Gullah Geechee Home Cooking published when she was 89 years old. Mrs. Meggett passed away earlier this year at age 90.
