Comfort foods for the new year

Since the world is still in various stages of angst over the Covid-19 pandemic, wildfires and other natural disasters, and in some cases political upheaval, it is no wonder people turn to comfort food to, well, provide comfort. Nigella Lawson is no exception, and she has provided us with the favorite comfort foods that she turns to again and again.

The list encompasses soup, bread, dessert, and more, including her take on a vegan spaghetti bolognese, pictured above. Don’t forget that we have indexed Nigella’s blog, so in the EYB Library you will find links to all of her recipes that are posted there. I am sure that our Members have all bookmarked – or memorized – their favorite comfort foods as well. My list includes (but is certainly not limited to):

It’s obvious that I turn to carbs when the going gets tough, whereas some folks gravitate toward meats or sweets. I suppose a few people head straight to vegetables during times of stress but most of my friends join me in the carb-loving corner. What are your favorite comfort foods?

If I didn’t make myself write a grocery list every week, my diet would probably be buttered noodles and beef or chicken teriyaki, chased by chocolate sundaes or brownies.

Thanks – I could have gone on and on but I edited myself.

Great list. I am working through my collection to narrow things to what we use.

My kitchen remodel is making me re-evaluate what items are truly essential.

Buttered toast, angel hair with garlic & oil, hot tea with milk & honey, graham crackers, oatmeal or farina. Seems that breakfast foods are the most comforting to me, aside from the pasta. Though, I’d be lying if I said I’d never eaten pasta to start the day.

      Toast is underrated.

Breakfast foods are comforting – I often make breakfast for dinner when I’m feeling down.

Dark chocolate is my go-to comfort but the pic of the vegan spaghetti bolognese looks tempting.

    Mashed potatoes, rye toast, popcorn

I love popcorn and one of my recent splurges was to buy a bunch of different heirloom varieties to try.
