I inherited my mother’s cookbook collection and cherish it almost as much as my memories of her cooking. I especially love her handwritten notes in the margins and all the torn pieces of paper serving as bookmarks.

  • matag  on  December 8, 2021

I didn’t realize it was a passion. I just assumed everyone loved to collect cookbooks, cook and eat as much as I do!

Italian sauces – there are so many variations I can get to a theme!

  • thebookwormbakes  on  December 9, 2021

my cookbook passion started at 14 when I bought a cookbook with my first ever paycheck! It has only gotten stronger, and so too have my shelves to hold them all!

  • pitterpat4  on  December 9, 2021

I grew up surrounded by cookbooks. My mother used McBride’s Encyclopedia of Cooking for recipes and as a booster seat for children at the table. I love to read cookbooks as much as use them for recipes.

  • sayeater  on  December 9, 2021

We all turn into our parents right? I grew up in the kitchen, where my mom made delicious dishes, some from memory, some from her vast collection of cookbooks and clipped recipes. A teacher by profession, she sometimes catered or made custom orders on the side and I was her helper. She also entertained a lot: themed dinner parties, gourmet clubs, progressive dinners. Even hosted a few cooking classes in our house. Travel was all about the food. Where are the best bakeries, specialty food purveyors, local delicacies? Breakfast, lunch and dinner planned and researched (and all of this without use of the internet!)

When she passed 7 years ago I wasn’t in a mental place to handle her large collection of cookbooks and sadly I let all but a few go. (If I had known about Eat Your Books then, it might have been different). A weird thing happened though after she was gone-my cookbook gene was activated, and my small 20 book collection has swelled 20 fold. I now have a collection to rival her own, with a focus on international cuisine and what I call travel cookbooks. I like to sit down, read, learn and then hopefully be inspired to bring a taste of places far away into my own home. She would have absolutely loved Eat Your Books for the way it allows us to fully use our extensive and cherished collections.

I justify my large cookbook collection by noting that “I’m not hurting anyone.” EYB has mare me appreciate these treasures so much more. Thank you!

  • Erobbins  on  December 10, 2021

Ms. Grogan’s cookbook book would be a dangerous one, but also illuminating! Probably my main weakness, cookbookwise, is food preserving: jams and canning, but also other techniques like salting, smoking, fermenting, drying. I love the idea and practice of transforming food in various ways.

  • sarahawker  on  December 10, 2021

My cookbook passion started “late”, definitely well into my 30’s before I amassed anything more than a standard bookshelf. These days I have to regularly purge my collection to those I really use or read. At the moment it leans heavily toward southern US and middle eastern countries.

  • DLC  on  December 10, 2021

Everything about food – shopping, preparing, cooking, serving, eating – is central to our culture. My cookbooks are a window into the soul of many different cuisines and the people for whom food is so much more than mere nourishment.

  • biro  on  December 10, 2021

I started collecting recipes as soon as I could read and cookbooks when s.b. suggest I need a hobby apart from collecting (other) books. Commuting to work was a good excuse to buy cookery books in order to have s.th. to read on the train and when travelling, I always know what I will take back home as a souvenir. Recently, I have started saving references to books I would like to have on Pinterest and my husband uses these as inspiration for what to get me as a present. Usually many, many presents. (I have a wonderful husband who loves my cooking)

  • Lijstjesmeisje  on  December 10, 2021

My husband keeps telling me I have more than enough cookbooks to read and look through, and I couldn’t possibly cook up all the recipes in them in one lifetime. Still I (secretly) keep buying ones I think I can not live without, and he keeps gifting me ones for birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas or no particular occasion at al.

  • UrsEva  on  December 10, 2021

I have been collecting recipes since I was a teenager simply copying recipes by hand from magazines. These were the days before the internet and copiers. Today my cookbook collection is out of control with over 1000 books. I love to cook around the world and, since I love to travel too, always figure out what I should eat wherever I go in the world. My husband loves how prepared we travel. At home I mix recipes from all sorts of cultures freely. We have to eat so why not make it adventurous and exciting. EYB has brought some sanity into my collection. I can actually find stuff!

  • LeMinou  on  December 11, 2021

  • ChicagoJen  on  December 11, 2021

I thank Eat Your Books every day for allowing me to get a handle on my cookbook passion (a.k.a. obsession). I have so many cookbooks that I have inherited from great aunts, grandparents, and my own parents, and I have difficulty stopping myself from buying more. I see cookbooks as a gateway into a culture and its people.

So many cookbooks but the well used favourites are those that combine taste with ease rather than anything too fancy and fiddly. Cookbooks by Nigel Slater and Nigella Lawson are current favourites but I’m also loving Rukmini Iyer’s Roasting Tin series

  • antpantsii  on  December 31, 2021

I all started off as a teenager, finding a box of old Gourmet magazines that someone had put out with the garbage. I took the box home. The magazines were from the 1960’s – so exotic. The travel section, the “you asked us” letters hoping for the recipes eaten in fancy restaurants, the back page, and the most incredible over the world. I felt that I had discovered that an alien species.
My cookbook collection has ebbed and flowed over the years as I moved about, and edited for the space that I had to store them. I have a soft spot for the coil bound cookbook fundraisers printed by church ladies, essayists such as MFK Fisher and Laurie Collin, and I still have many of the Gourmet magazines that started me down this road decades ago.
