Cookbook giveaway – Rachel Khoo’s Kitchen Notebook

Kitchen NotebookAfter years of living in Paris, Rachel Khoo recently returned to her hometown of London. Excited by the city’s vivacious food scene, Rachel decided to make her hometown the focus of one part of her new cookbook, Rachel Khoo’s Kitchen Notebook. You can read an excerpt from the book’s introduction and view images from the book as well.

The cookbook is packed to the brim with 100 standout recipes, full-colour photography and Rachel’s very own sketches of the food and places she encounters. Out and about, she finds the most delicious fare, recording it all in her kitchen notebook.

We’re delighted to offer two copies of Rachel Khoo’s Kitchen Notebook to EYB Members. One of the entry options is answering the following question in the blog comments:

    My favourite dish to make that was inspired by my travels is French crepes. I spent my 3rd year of university in France and when I make crepes it reminds me of my time abroad, even though it was 20 years ago.

    I'm still trying to recreate those great fish sandwiches you get in Istanbul. Getting pretty close now, some beaut local (brisbane) mackerel featured last time. Pretty simple but so delish. When I told my fishmonger what I was planning, we ended up sharing stories of our travels in Turkey. Thats what it's all about, n'est ce pas?

    I've lived abroad five times (soon to be six!), so I love to purchase cookbooks that help me recapture the local food I enjoyed. This includes several Spanish cookbooks (I love Spanish omelette, paella, and tapas), Quebecois cookbooks (I love anything with maple syrup!), and Japanese cookbooks (I am particularly fond of shojin ryori, vegan Buddhist food served at temples). I also love to purchase cookbooks on vacation and have come home with an Ashkenzi cookbook in French, some Japanese-language cookbooks and several regional Italian cookbooks.

    Lived in Spain for two years and stayed with a family. The wife was a great but simple cook. Learned to add a bit of dark chocolate to beef stew, make tortilla espanol, and observed her prepare beef tongue and chicken feet. Lovely, kind woman.

    I love to make a Korean dish called "Andong Jjimdak". It is braised chicken that is a little sweet and and a little spicy served with potatoes, carrots, cucumber and glass noodles.

    Zuppa Neopolitanska. Made with love by my boyfriend's Polish grandma in Krakow. We can't communicate verbally but we connected with food. I have tried to replicate this cheesy noodle soup but can't seem to get it just right.

    seafood file gumbo after a trip to New Orleans. I had to buy a jar of file powder and bring it back to Australia as it wasn't available here at the time. It's now one of my all time favourite dishes.

    I'm still trying to perfect a light, crumbly scone after traveling to London a couple years ago! I've found dried raspberries and strawberries and I make scones with them as variations on the currant version.

    I don't think my cooking is really inspired by my travels per se. I love traveling to new places, but I also love cooking new food, especially food from other cultures/cuisines, so I don't have to have traveled somewhere in order to make a new dish. In fact, I'm much more likely to have already tried and made the food of a country before I'm able to go there than vice versa.

    When we were in southern California we fell in love with Korean food. Back home in NC there are no Korean restaurants anywhere for hundreds of miles. I finally started cooking my own. Bilimbap was one of the first ones I tried on my own.

    I think my first ever travel-inspired recipe was French apple tart. I eventually cracked it and can now rival the local patisserie! Most recently, Spanish potato tortilla. But I haven't yet managed the perfect flavour and texture.

    Eating Thai street food in Bangkok changed my life! On a hot summer night I love to have friends over for a Thai bbq. I make Thai spring rolls and sticky rice, put on some Thai music and crack a few Thai beers while we sit around the traditional bbq and everyone enjoys cooking their meats, noodles, Asian greens etc. It smells and tastes so good, but the best thing is that everyone gets involved. Can't beat it!

    Good question! We travel a lot, and I cook constantly, but I don't usually connect the two…I think because I'm cooking my way through all of my cookbooks, so not really searching out new recipes unless I happen to see them. So just one dish comes to mind – a delicious chicken schnitzel with capers and lemon that we had in Boston or DC, and then I saw a similar recipe at http://www.cooksillustrated.com. But I haven't made it yet – lol.

    I love travel AND food so I often try to recreate dishes I've experienced. One of my favorite is kofta, which I first had in a small whole in the wall restaurant, if you can call it that, in the middle of a Cairo market area where very few tourists go. I can't remember where it was exactly, as a local friend took me there, but it was the best kofta I've ever had.
