How could we resist an article called “18 Weird and Wonderful British Foods You Need to Try“? Given our global membership we’re all for creating a community of food, so pointing out this article provides a public service.

    I can opine on Yarg! A cheesemonger in my little town has earned enough respect to carry Neal's Yard Dairy cheeses, and this week she has Cornish Yarg. It's a cheese that would be spectacular for an event, where the whole wheel can be admired. When the curds have solidified enough to hold their shape, the wheel is wrapped with nettle leaves, which leave their impression as the bloomy rind builds around them. The taste is the essence of spring — light, tangy, but with a creamy background. If the other foods in this list are half as good as Yarg, I'm going to have to seek some of them out.

    Fiona and I grew up in Bedfordshire but I have never heard of the Clanger or heard us referred to as clangers. So I am skeptical on that one. But most of the Scottish ones I can vouch for (our parents are Scottish). I'm so glad they didn't include the deep-fried Mars bar.

    My mum used to make Sussex pond pudding when I was a child – the lemon inside was always in one piece. Delicious! Tablet and cullen skink were also favourites in our house.
