Curds and whey

It's a good thing I am not lactose intolerant, because I have been on a dairy kick recently. First it was cultured butter, and now it's homemade ricotta cheese. It amazes me that something this simple can produce such fantastic results. Two of my more recent cookbook purchases have been Home Cheese Making: Recipes for 75 Homemade Cheeses by Ricki… read more

Are these 21 vintage recipes really “upsetting”?

I've seen a couple of references around the web to a recent Buzz Feed Food feature called 21 Truly Upsetting Vintage Recipes - obviously, these recipes have hit a nerve for many. But I wonder about the use of "upsetting." The youth among us may be able to be objective about these recipes - and, frankly, given the art of… read more

Jazzing up slice-and-bake cookies without icing

If you have a favorite plain, refrigerator-style cookie - or bought a package of slice-and-bake cookie dough - and want to jazz the cookies up without resorting to frosting or icing, Lynne Kasper in NPR's The Splendid Table has some excellent ideas in How to make store-bought slice-and-bake cookies more gourmet: "There are two approaches: the before-baking list and the… read more

The recipe for the Zuni Cafe Roast Chicken with Bread Salad

Why microwaving kale, carrots, or other vegies can create sparks

We're going into the holiday season, so it's nice to have a collection of healthy, quick snacks and appetizers to go along with the more traditional ones. And kale chips definitely fit the bill. However, making kale chips in the oven can be tricky as they either never dry out or can burn - in any event, they take an… read more

Comparing 8 famous roast chickens to determine the tastiest bird

Personally, I would die a happy person if the Zuni Cafe's Roast Chicken was my last meal. However, I do know people who swear by Thomas Keller's and Julia Child's versions. So I was really excited to read about the great roast chicken cookoff that BuzzFeedFood just ran. Essentially, they took 8 famous roast chickens and had them compete in… read more
