Tea innovations

Forget pumpkin spice lattes, the latest thing in beverages is pumpkin spice tea. That, and along with other trends, is driving an uptick in the popularity of tea, especially in the US, which has not always been tea-friendly. (We got a little salty about it back in 1776 and never got over it.) But now Americans are embracing tea, and the hottest worldwide trends are poised to come to our doorstep.

Besides pumpkin spice, another flavor getting love is pistachio. Between the pistachio lattes and Dubai chocolate bars, pistachio has never been more popular, and now it’s being added to tea. So is musk melon and honeydew, two other trending additions to tea. Jumping on another bandwagon, protein is being pumped into tea for a boost in nutrition.

Another trend to watch out for is bubble teas blended with yogurt, fruit, and avocados. These are already popular across Asia and will likely arrive in other parts of the world – France has already seen this, so it’s only a matter of time before it hops across the pond. Of course you don’t have to wait for the trends to come to you – use the EYB Library to find recipes for boba/bubble tea and other tea-based beverages.

How is pumpkin spice different from a chai? Is this just a marketing gimic? I admit that when I hear pumpkin spice, I taste pumpkin, not the spices in pumpkin pie, so the term does not make me want to try it in any form. But that’s me. I do like some chai teas and my younger son is a real fan.
