Braided Heritage: Recipes and Stories on the Origin of American Cuisine by Jessica B. Harris delivers the sweeping origin story of American food and how Indigenous, European, and African traditions intertwined to form an entirely new cuisine, with over 100 recipes for the modern home cook. Through essays, interviews, and recipes, Dr. Harris presents American cuisine as a complex braid. By beginning with a recipe and tracing its origins, we come to understand the heritage of some of America’s most treasured dishes. Accompanying the recipes are stories from a diverse collection of families that help illuminate our understanding of contemporary American cooking and examine how dishes such as clam chowder (which is connected to Indigenous stews but got its name from the French name for the cooking pot, chaudière) and Louisiana gumbo (in which sassafras is used as a condiment thanks to the Choctaw people) became American classics. With recipes ranging from the festive to the everyday, Braided Heritage offers a new look at American culinary history.

Garlic, Olive Oil + Everything Mediterranean: Simple Recipes for the Home Cook by Daen Lia was previously published in AU in 2023. The author learned to cook from her Spanish and Italian mother and grandmother. With the smell of garlic and roasted tomatoes wafting through the kitchen, she discovered the alchemy of a few simple ingredients: garlic, olive oil, and whatever is fresh, whether a vegetable or protein – or both. Here, Daen brings together modern Mediterranean recipes that any home cook, regardless of skill level can make, any day of the week. Morgenstern is the owner and founder of Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream in New York City, a temple to ice cream. For a decade the shop has been a must-visit destination, known for its extreme dedication to flavor. The author develops each recipe specifically for each individual ice cream, fine tuning the balance of sugar and dairy (and forgoing eggs, “which make things taste eggy“), for the most flavorful ice creams you’ll find anywhere. Now, in this his first cookbook, he shares the wisdom that he’s accumulated over a lifetime of obsessive study. And, of course, alongside the flavors themselves are a plethora of sundaes, sauces, and more, giving home cooks everything they need to churn out professional grade ice cream at home.
