Move over Julie & Julia, here comes Trent & Ina

Cookbook lovers no doubt remember the movie Julie & Julia, an adaptation of the book Julie & Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen. The smash hit revolved around a blogger who set out to cook every recipe from Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking in one year. Following in these footstep, another blogger is doing something quite similar with Ina Garten’s recipes.

Trent Pheifer, a nonprofit worker who lives in New York, started his “Store Bought Is Fine” project in late 2015. On his blog and on Instagram (where he has more than 31,000 followers), Pheifer shares his recreations of Ina’s recipes. He’s already made over 1,000 of them! While I have been a fan of many recipe writers, I do not have the dedication it takes to devote myself to making recipes almost exclusively from one author. But if you are going to choose just one person whose food you cook, you could do far worse than Ina Garten, who has published 11 bestselling cookbooks.

In an interview with Food52, Pheifer explains that as he started the project “the initial concept was to put pictures of my horrible food next to her gorgeous-looking professional photos, but that kind of fell by the wayside over time.” At his current pace of 4-5 recipes per week, Pheifer estimates that he will have finished cooking all of Ina’s recipes in another year or so.

I, too, have made over 1000 of Ina’s recipes. Nearly all are winners. I started back in 2011, writing my notes on post-its, which I later transcribed into EYB. I don’t repeat recipes very often (always want to try new things), but many of Ina’s are my go-to recipes, especially for entertaining.

Hello anya_sf: I KNEW that I read a comment from you a few years ago re: your goal of cooking through her books…..I was thinking of commenting that an EYB member was doing the same but didn’t want to name you without your permission. As I continue to cook through my BFC collection (& I do have all of them) I read your comments often!

Just a friendly FYI: the movie, ‘Julie & Julia,’ was based on two books – Julie & Julia by Julie Powell and ‘My Life in France’ by Julia Child & Alex Prudhomme. My favorite movie and Julia’s book is my favorite book 🙂
